Thinking of getting a website designed or redesigned with us? Maybe you want some SEO along with that? If so here are a couple of things to keep in mind. We’re based in Mayo and we offer website design, content writing, SEO and social media management. We hope the following tips help you out.
1. Have Passwords
If you already have a website in place but want it updated or redesigned, it’s best if you have the necessary passwords needed to access it, especially if you want to stick with your current host. This is a massive stumbling block for a lot of people. You probably had your site designed some years ago by an individual or company and never bothered getting them, because you never needed them perhaps. Well now you do! You’ll need passwords for the website backend so that people like us can get in there and start our redesign work. In particular ask for
- Wordpress login details
- FTP username and passwords
- Google analytics details
- Social media account logins
Many times people have asked us about website design and the line of communication was cut short once we started asking for passwords and login credentials. It’s staggering actually!
It may be a case that you don’t want to go back to your original developer to ask for these because you are essentially getting someone else to redesign the work they already had in place. That shouldn’t matter. The website belongs to you. You bought it and you are renting the space where it resides. Don’t be afraid to ask for them. You have the right to ask for these as essentially they are your property.
2. SEO is not a Magic Switch
On a number of occasions I have had people contacting us regarding SEO because they weren’t happy with their SEO service provider. They’d say things like, “We’re not happy with the work being done” or “We’re not on page one of Google”. To this I would ask “How long have you been established online?” It’s amazing how many times I have been answered with, “Well we’re only a start-up” or “We’re only in business a year or two”. Next I would ask if they had a blog in place that would be updated regularly to which they would reply “No, we didn’t see the need for one” or “We didn’t want to spend the extra money getting content written” .
This sets of major alarm bells for us.
SEO is not a magic light switch. Firstly, you cannot ask someone to perform SEO for your brand and expect instant high ranking results. It just doesn’t work like that. If anything SEO is on-going almost nurturing work. It’s a slow complex process spread across many areas such as writing, research, customer interaction and of course design and development know-how. Secondly, if you’re not prepared to research or invest in something like a standard blog in order to grow your brand then you need to ask yourself how serious you are exactly about building your business.
So, in essence, YES we perform SEO.
It takes time but we are always happy to work with you on an on-going basis to get your site as best ranked as it can be.
We work diligently on your brand and web presence in order to make it grow naturally in accordance with Google specifications.
3. Have an Idea of What You Want
Yes, I know, we are the designers; we should be coming up with the possible designs for you to review. Absolutely. However, when we first meet it’s always a major bonus to have some sort of idea of what you might want from your new website, on an aesthetic or even functional level. Are there any other sites that you use a lot, or like the look of? Tell us about them! It’s one of the best ways for us to gauge where you’re at initially with the project. It gives us an instant sense of scope, feel and design that may have taken an hour of a meeting or several e-mails back and forward to get to and just basically gets us on your level of thinking about the project from the start.
So there you go. Just some handy tips if you’re thinking of getting some website design or redesign done with us, or anyone for that matter, in the future. We hope it helps.
